This presentation explores the treatment of a latency-aged child whose internal world emerged and became thinkable through play. Using clinical vignettes, the therapist and supervisor consider play as a holding environment in which omnipotent fantasy, rage at dependency, and, beneath these, the yearning to be sought and found are enacted and metabolized. Particular attention is given to how the therapist receives and survives the child’s use of her as an object, thereby facilitating new experiences of loving and hating within the therapeutic relationship. The supervisory process is highlighted as a parallel holding space that supports the therapist’s capacity to reflect upon her countertransference so that she may remain available to the child’s developmental struggles.

Qian Cao, Ph.D is an advanced candidate in both the Child and Adolescent Program (CAP) and the Adult Program at IPTAR, and a participant in the IPTAR On-Site School program. She is also Postdoctoral Research Scholar with the Initiative in Ancient and Contemporary Philosophy at Columbia University. Her research develops a distinctive dialogue between ancient Greek philosophy—particularly Plato’s ethics and epistemology—and psychoanalysis.

Phyllis Beren, Ph.D is a fellow, on the faculty, and supervising training analyst at IPTAR. She is past president of IPTAR, and past director of the IPTAR Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Training Program and currently is co-chair of the CAP Training Committee. She is the editor of the book “Narcissistic Disorders in Children and Adolescents: Diagnosis and Treatment”, has published papers about child, adolescent, and adult treatment, has written essays for the magazine ROOM: A Sketchbook for Analytic Action, and serves on their editorial Board. She has also written a memoir.
