LACAN FROM THE BEGINNINGS

Judith Hamilton, MD (Ret), FRCP (Psych)

Tuesdays, October 13, 20, 27, November 3 and 10

7:30-9, Zoom

This course is designed for those with little prior knowledge of the French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan. It provides an introduction to his history, context, and the three phases of his work, along with contemporary developments in the Lacanian field. The Early Phase covers the signifier, the three registers, the unconscious structured like a language, desire, and the big Other. The Middle and Late Phases are presented in detail, demonstrating Lacan’s evolving views on the goals of psychoanalysis and recommendations for clinical practice, with clinical examples. Contemporary developments include Jacques-Alain Miller’s concept of Ordinary Psychosis, the relation of Lacan’s ideas to current diagnoses (including borderline states), and approaches to prevalent clinical presentations.
