Psychoanalysts’ views on aggression – and on the analyst’s role in it – have shifted dramatically over the years. Starting with Freud’s drive theory, moving through the Kleinians and contemporary Kleinians, Winnicott and the British Independent group, each wave of thinking has reshaped how aggression is understood and worked with in the transference and countertransference.
