Group and organizational life are part of being human and impact the lives of patients and psychoanalysts. As human beings we are in constant interplay with the systems we are a part of, they influencing us and we them. These systems also become part of our internal psychological lives.
This is an introductory course on theories and concepts that are core to a psychoanalytic study of groups and organizations. It will include readings, discussion, case presentations, and experiential learning focused on understanding underlying unconscious processes. Readings will be drawn from the classics and more recent writing and thinking.
Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will become familiar with some of the theories and core concepts of the psychoanalytic study of groups and organizations.
2. Participants will become familiar with how these theories and concepts can be applied to issues in organizations.
3. Participants will become more familiar with how these theories and concepts might be applied in clinical work and experiences in organizations.
Frances Unsell, M.Div., LP has consulted for over 35 years to organizations and their senior leaders taking into account the people, organization and context. She is a graduate of Union Theological Seminar with a concentration in Psychiatry and Religion (psychoanalytic orientation) where she was a Rockefeller Fellow as well as the Westchester Institute for Training in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy. Her primary training in groups and organizations was through the working and training conferences of Tavistock Institute’s Leicester Conference and a four year apprenticeship with The Grubb Institute. She has also trained in dance therapy at The American Dance Festival. Frances is a member of the Steering Committee of The Gould Center for the Psychoanalytic Organizational Study and Consultation and the Board of the A.K. Rice Institute for the Study of Social Systems. She practices in Darien, CT.
Susan S. Berger, Psy.D. FIPA is the Interim Director of the Gould Center for Psychoanalytic Organizational Studies and Consultation and is a Fellow (Supervising and Training Psychoanalyst) at IPTAR. Her organizational work at IPTAR includes having been the On-Site Coordinator and Supervisor at Girls’ Prep Charter School as part of IPTAR’s On-Site School Program, and former Co-Director of IPTAR’s Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Program
(CAP). She completed the Socio-Analytic Program taught by Laurence Gould and attended group relations conferences and workshops. She has integrated psychoanalytic organizational thinking in various ways in her clinical work, in writing about Intergenerational Trauma, in her teaching about and conducting workshops on working with parents, and as a member and board member of various organizations, including IPTAR.

9 CE credits will be granted to participants who have registered, have documented evidence of attendance of the entire program and have completed the on-line evaluation form. Upon completion of the evaluation form a Certificate of Completion will be emailed to all participants who comply with these requirements.
